Life in a bikini: What a dream. But for many of us stripping off isn’t that simple. Winter dryness, pale skin, and wobbly bits can taint this should-be blissful notion of letting all our worries slip away and heading for the beach. Instead of spending hours fretting, prepping and preening, the right products can minimize this and work wonders on all of our body hang-ups. These prep, beach-time, and post-sun basics will help you achieve a beautiful body and leave you much more time to enjoy the sun, sand and sea.

The Rattle’s Beauty Staples. Liz Earle Cleanse & Polish

I absolutely love to try new products, and as much as I believe in routine when it comes to skin care I also believe in really focussing on what your skin needs and changing things up to suit it’s daily needs. That being said, there are the staples; the bread and butter of skincare that I have to have in my bathroom regardless of season, location, or condition.
One of these is Liz Earle’s Cleanse and Polish Hot Cloth Cleaner. This is part of the Liz Earle 3-step cleanse routine and can be bought as a set or individually.

I first opted to try Liz Earle products after searching for a UK alternative to my favourite skin care brand Arcona. This is only available in LA. and although I usually have them sent to the UK my Mum insisted that her beloved Liz Earle Cleanse and Polish was the bees knees, so I thought I’d save some money and give it a whirl!
I have tried the routine for a 3 month period, and have tried them individually as part of my own routine. Here is what I thought…

Cleanse and Polish, £11.75 for 100ml

It really is a fantastic product. It is gentle due to its creamy cocoa-butter formula, and this is perfect for winter when foaming cleansers tend to dry the skin out more. I prefer an oil or cream cleanser, and find this to be my favourite. Massaging it into end-of-day skin feels very soothing and is extremely effective in getting rid of makeup. I find it gentle enough on the eyes, although I still use an eye make up remover first even though it claims to remove stubborn mascara.
The polish stage is much like a mini facial, and your skin just feels so very clean, which is just the nicest feeling for bedtime.

Instant Boost Skin Tonic, £13.25

Gorgeous, gentle and refreshing. I found that I didn’t actually need it after the Cleanse and Polish as I loved the squeaky clean feeling and didn’t want to put anything else onto my face unless I really had a lot of make up on. For the morning however, when a splash of water is my usual routine, I love it. It is a great refresher and the aloe vera, chamomile and cucumber make it so very soothing. It is a good all year round product, both gentle enough for winter and zingy enough for summer.

Skin Repair Moisturiser, Dry/Sensitive, £19.25

This moisturiser has become a real staple for me. More so because, typically like something that is good for you, I don’t particularly like it, it just works! For the heat it is a no-no, but due to our lovely (miserable and chilly) English weather that isn’t really a problem in the UK. I don’t use it all the time, but it is undeniably a great go to for easy moisture and the days when your skin needs a bit of a break. I don’t especially like the smell, it’s not particularly special, but for an easy, hard-working product and at that price I’m not going to complain! It layers well with a serum and an oil for night time and sunblock and primer in the day time. I do switch to a lighter version in the summer, but for this time of year it is faultless.

And the three products are £45.00 for a set including a 200ml Cleanse and Polish and a free 200ml botanical body cream. When you do the maths, for that price I find it hard to do fault with any of the products.

Try these hard-working staples for yourself and your skin will thank you. They are my winter skin care saviours and I am sure I will return back to them for many years to come.

Thanks for the recommendation Mum!

Health & Beauty: The Wonder That Is Papaya

Since travelling in South America I have become obsessed with Papaya. I used to hate its musky yet sweet taste, but having the usual travellers-stomach issues associated with that way of life, new foods and lack of a routine, I found myself craving it. Why? Well it is just the most stomach-soothing, gentle, vitamin-packed super food which just does the trick to deliver every thing your body needs whilst promoting digestive health. It contains so many vitamins and anti-oxidants, including carotenes, vitamin C, flavonoids; the B vitamins, folate and pantothenic acid; and the minerals, potassium, copper, and magnesium. All in addition to being a great source of fiber. It also contains Papain, which is great for injury, allergies and trauma.

I loved having it as a juice alone or with Mango. Try blending with almond milk or natural yogurt and banana for a gentle, stomach soothing, hangover cure.

But, the benefits of papaya do not stop here. All the vitamins and anti-oxidants mentioned are just as beneficial for our skin. I have been using Elemis Papaya Enzyme Peel for a few years now, and I swear by it. The first thing I did for my skin when I returned from my travels was treat it to this soothing and rejuvenating mask. De-clogging, hydrating, and repairing, it is a great post-holiday reset, but also for this time of year when summer has had its wicked way with us and we are about to go into the cold of winter. I use it once-twice weekly for a few weeks, or as needed for an extra pick up for tired, dehydrated skin.

Other Papaya-Packed Products:

Cleanse skin gently with Decleor aroma cleanse hydra radiance soothing and cleansing mousse, containing papaya, grape and white mulberry to cleanse and soothe. Caudalie Vinoperfect Day Perfecting Cream SPF 15 uses Papaya enzymes to correct, perfect and nourish skin throughout the day, whilst its added SPF is perfect for this time of year.

For body, use Elemental Herbology Macadamia and Papaya Body Scrub to refresh and re-new skin that has had its fair share of salt and sand over the summer. And lastly, for added protection for lips and dry skin, Papaya Gold PAWPAW Moisturising Balm does the job whilst being gentle and soothing.

So when looking for something restorative for the skin and body look no further than papaya. Allow its anti-oxidants and vitamins repair and restore your skin after the summer and protect it for the winter ahead.
